The neighbourhood
For a long time this area of the city was neglected and marginalised and there are still some streets in the so-called Barrio Chino that are better avoided. However, the city’s planners bravely opted for a plan of rehabilitation for the area by increasing the diversity and number of cultural attractions on offer.
The Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB) and the Modern Art Museum of Barcelona (MACBA) are the most obvious examples of this change, which is also evident in the array of galleries and designer shops that proliferate in the area’s narrow streets.
The neighbourhood, which is home to one of the highest concentrations of immigrants in the city, has a lively, vibrant atmosphere. The cultural jigsaw of the population, of all ages and nationalities, make this area the favourite of many visitors.
